Beer purchase escalates: Heringer hits gas station employee!

A strange incident at a gas station becomes the subject of a court ruling in Bad Hersfeld. On November 5, 2025, a 55-year-old man from Heringen was convicted of aggravated robbery and grievous bodily harm. The incident occurred on a Sunday in August 2024 when the defendant entered the gas station while intoxicated to buy beer.

The situation escalated when the employee informed him that the daily billing had already been completed and no more beer could be sold. He then grabbed four cans of beer himself and just put four euros on the counter. When the employee tried to stop him from escaping, he hit her in the ear with a full beer can, causing pain and pressure in the ear. In such chaos, you can imagine what was going on!

The court ruling

Although the employee was unable to testify in court for health reasons, there was a witness who saw the altercation. Judge Christina Dern explained that she wanted to strive for a fair verdict during a consultation with public prosecutor Kornelius Raab and defense attorney Jochen Kreissl. The public prosecutor demanded a conviction for a less serious case of aggravated robbery in conjunction with grievous bodily harm.

The verdict ultimately fell in favor of justice: the defendant was sentenced to one year in prison, which was suspended for three years. He also has to do 40 hours of community service and pay the costs of the procedure. At the end of the hearing, the verdict was final and concluded another chaotic Sunday in the history of the gas station.

Focus on crime development

In a broader context, this incident is another example of the evolution of crime in Germany. The police crime statistics (PKS) show a decrease in overall crime of 1.7% in 2024, which is an interesting development. The main reason for this decline is fewer cannabis crimes due to partial legalization. However, there is an increase in crime that affects citizens' sense of security, especially in urban areas.

The most common crimes last year included theft, property and counterfeit crimes, and brutality crimes. A comprehensive analysis shows that the probability of becoming a victim of crime is higher in German cities, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia. The clearance rate in 2024 was 58%, which is understandable given the decreasing number of young suspects and an increasing number of non-German suspects.

It remains to be seen how crime will develop in Germany and whether such bizarre incidents at gas stations will continue to end up in the courtroom. The social discussion about security and crime remains exciting, and as local informants we will continue to keep our finger on the pulse.
