Cycling for the environment: Over 1,200 participants in city and school cycling!

In Cologne, the period of city and school cycling, which took place from May 18th to June 7th, was concluded with a celebratory award ceremony. Over 1,200 participants from the district came together and covered an impressive distance of around 200,000 kilometers. This saved around 33 tons of CO₂ emissions. That's an achievement worth seeing!

The participants ranged from little cyclists aged four to stately 90-year-old experienced riders. The municipality of Hohenroda was particularly pleased with the title of the most cycling-active municipality, with particular attention to the district of Glaam, where five percent of the residents cycled over 10,000 kilometers - that's an impressive 175 kilometers per resident.

The winners and their successes

The team from was the proud winner RSV Bad Hersfeld, which covered the most distance at 14,889 kilometers. In second and third place were Asteelflash Germany GmbH with 14,029 kilometers and the local club Glaam with 10,162 kilometers.

  • Siegerkategorien:

It was particularly pleasing that the Eichendorff School in Cornberg stood out among the participating schools, with 84% of the students actively cycling. This shows how important it is to get younger generations excited about cycling, which also corresponds to the goals of the campaign. Because that Goal of the campaign is to easily motivate as many people as possible to cycle and thus make a contribution to climate protection.

Cycling on the rise

Cycling in Germany is becoming increasingly popular. According to that Bicycle monitor 2023 46 percent of Germans plan to travel by bike or Pedelec more often in the future. A quarter are even considering buying a new bike or pedelec within the next year. E-bikes are particularly in demand: they attract 48 percent of those interested in buying. This speaks for the shift towards environmentally friendly forms of mobility!

Surveys on cyclists' feelings of safety show that 60 percent mostly feel safe. Particularly protected cycle paths are a major advantage for 94 percent of those surveyed. However, challenges still remain, with environmental factors such as reckless driving by drivers contributing to uncertainty.

The next campaign period for city and school cycling has already been decided: from September 6th to September 26th, 2026, people are once again encouraged to pedal. Maybe there will be one or two teams that can top the successes of this year's participants?

Ultimately, it remains to be said that cycling is not only fun, but is also considered an effective means of combating climate change. Another good reason to get your bike out of the basement more often!
