Heavy rain nightmare: Hesse is fighting against the rage of the weather!
As is often the case in life, the weather in Hesse comes in waves - and right now we are in the middle of the storm! On July 7, 2025, meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) warn of strong thunderstorms and heavy rain in the northern regions. As if the weather carousel wasn't already spinning wildly enough, the warning level has risen to 2 out of 4, and that makes it clear: no one should close their eyes to the impending storms. The warnings primarily affect the districts of Waldeck-Frankenberg, Werra-Meißner, Schwalm-Eder and Hersfeld-Rotenburg until 3 p.m. today, as well as Kassel, where similar signs are expected until the same time, as HNA reported.
We already experienced what could come of this in August 2024, when the Trendelburg-Gottsbüren region was hit by a storm that delivered over 170 liters of rain per square meter in less than 10 hours. Over 100 households suffered millions in damage. In light of these heretical weather events, one might ask: What can each of us do to protect ourselves and our homes? Experts recommend clear measures to avoid damage, as Tagesschau writes.
The right preparation
The recommendations are varied and should be taken seriously. Waterproof windows and doors, increased lighting connections and non-return valves are just some of the protective measures that can help protect your home from the threat of flooding. Nevertheless, unsealed areas and green roofs are also of enormous importance in order to ensure smooth infiltration and minimize the risk of backflow.
Climate change as a driving force
The question of why we are experiencing such extreme weather changes in the last few weeks can be explained not only by a higher frequency of rainfall, but also by climate change, which definitely has a hand in it. According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming is significantly increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events, such as heavy rain. As Earth's surface temperatures accelerate, we are being forced to rethink our strategy to mitigate the climate crisis. It is high time to prioritize the protection of our environment and the reduction of greenhouse gases, as WWF documents.
Anyone traveling in Hesse this summer should be careful. The currently expected rainfall amounts of up to 15 liters per square meter per hour are a clear sign that the forces of nature should not be underestimated. Temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees could add some warmth to the weather chaos, but further thunderstorms and rather cool temperatures between 17 and 20 degrees are expected from Tuesday at the latest. However, a tempting weather that can be summarized in one sentence: It remains exciting in Hesse!
Given these warnings and the tried and tested protective measures, it is essential that we prepare ourselves and our loved ones well. If the storm actually strikes, be vigilant and act prudently – safety comes first!
