Increasing requests for help: Frankfurt is fighting against sexual violence!

There has been a lot of movement in the region recently when it comes to the issues of sexual violence and offers of help, especially in Frankfurt and the Hochtaunuskreis. The Wildwasser Frankfurt e.V. advisory center recently published its annual report for 2024 and the numbers speak for themselves. According to the report from journal-frankfurt.de, the demand for help has increased dramatically.

A worrying increase in requests for help

In the Hochtaunus district there was an increase of 26 percent, bringing the total number of requests for help to 215. Fortunately, the numbers in Frankfurt also show a remarkable, albeit stable, picture: there were a total of 628 inquiries, which shows a stable trend compared to the previous year (2022: 505 inquiries). What is particularly important is that over half of those seeking help are under 27 years old, including at least eleven young people who are younger than 18. These developments highlight the urgency of real support.

Who are those seeking help?

The advice center found that 128 affected girls, women, boys, men and non-binary people sought help in Frankfurt in 2024. Of these inquiries, 46 percent came from professionals from schools, childcare facilities and youth welfare offices, which reflects the high sensitivity and responsibility of these institutions. According to the report, the rate of third-party inquiries also increased by 14 percent compared to previous years. This means that more and more people in the area are willing to stand up for those affected.

Offers for those affected

A particularly important offer of help is aimed at people under the age of 21 who have been affected by sexual crimes and have to testify in court. wildwasser-berlin.de ensures that those affected are supported by experienced advisors who are familiar with the legal proceedings. No details about the crime are discussed here in order to avoid any form of influence. The young witnesses are given the opportunity to visit the court building and the courtroom before the actual hearings and to find out about their rights and obligations.

A helpline for immediate support

For many people affected, it is often the first step to seek conversation. The helpline for sexual abuse on 0800 22 55 530, which is run by commissioned-abuse.de is operated, offers a confidential and anonymous contact point. Not only those affected, but also relatives and specialists can get advice here. The counselors are psychologically and pedagogically qualified and enable a confidential conversation without the risk of personal data being passed on.

Resources and support urgently needed

Despite the diverse offerings, the situation is tense. Jasmin Sidki-Klinger, board member of Wildwasser Frankfurt e.V., emphasizes that the association is working at the limit of its capacity and sees the situation as precarious. The increasing demand urgently requires long-term, specialized offers as well as political support in order to be able to continue to support those seeking help.

It remains to be hoped that these developments will not only be perceived as a warning sign, but also as an incentive to provide the necessary resources and to provide those affected with the help they urgently need.
