Usinger Schafferei: Colorful ideas sustainably revitalize the city center!

In Usingen there is new life in the city center thanks to the Usinger Schafferei. The initiative is located in a former business center and is one of the 20 state winners of the “Ab in die Mitte! 2025” competition, as faz.net reports. The project, which aims to create a meeting center for young and old, relies on active participation and therefore offers all interested citizens and initiatives the opportunity to get involved.

Creative ideas become reality in a 400 square meter room. Here, the “Colorful Workshop” has created colorful works of art from old wooden chairs, which will soon be used as mobile seating in the city. Nadine Fork, Ute Harmel and Mayor Steffen Wernard actively support the workshop so that it becomes a place of encounter and exchange.

A place of meeting

The vision of Usinger Schafferei is to revitalize the city center. Regular groups, such as a parent-child group or a youth club with its own area, should help bring different generations together. The open space, which is already equipped with colorful chairs and painting areas, not only invites creativity, but also offers space for intercultural and cross-generational encounters.

The idea of social sustainability is central. According to usingen.de, the sheep factory is financed from the city budget, with 10,000 euros available in the budget and additional prize money of 15,000 euros was won from the competition. This money is intended to help establish a self-sustaining, self-managed structure in order to be able to maintain the offerings in the long term.

Initiatives against vacancies

Vacancy in inner cities is a widespread problem that poses major challenges not only in Usingen but in many cities. The decline in business due to online trading has meant that proven business spaces can no longer be used in many places. However, as stadtmarketing.eu states, the reuse of such areas is an opportunity to activate unused potential and revitalize the city temples.

The Usinger Schafferei is an example of how empty spaces can be used sensibly through creative approaches and community engagement. In addition to the regular offers, pop-up stores are also planned, which will give local businesses and start-ups the opportunity to implement their ideas in a test phase. This means that the Schafferei will also be an important point of contact for economic impulses in the city.

The Schafferei runs until the end of September and could subsequently move if the owners of the building want to re-let it. During this time they have the opportunity to continue working on their vision and make Usingen a lively place for all generations - an approach that could become a model not only in Usingen, but in many other cities.
