Industry in Hesse: The need for action for the economy is now required!

In Hesse, the signs point to a storm for the industry. Given the loss of 27,000 industrial jobs since 2018, it is high time for politicians to reset the course. Today, every fifth job in Hesse and every fifth euro depends on industry. This clear picture paints active online. So it is a huge economic foundation that cannot be allowed to shake.

The challenges are complex: location costs are too high, bureaucracy that is often more of a hindrance than a help, and a general lack of speed. The pressure on companies is increasing to assert themselves in an increasingly competitive environment. Here, the industry is demanding a better innovation ecosystem and a functioning infrastructure to ensure competitiveness.

The voices of the industry

Entrepreneurs like Philipp von Hirschheydt, CEO of AUMOVIO, make it clear: “Change is uncomfortable, but if you wait, you lose.” This appeal is supported by Prime Minister Boris Rhein, who sees industry as the backbone of value creation, innovative strength and prosperity. There is therefore an urgent need for action to ensure that development does not stall.

The state government has already announced steps to create suitable framework conditions. An investment booster and a law to reduce bureaucracy are to be introduced. But it remains to be seen how far these measures actually go.

Industry as a growth engine

A study by HESSENMETALL, HessenChemie and IW Consult underlines the importance of industry in Hesse. This shows that without a strong industrial base, Hesse not only loses economic substance, but also jobs and innovative strength. Currently, around 720,000 jobs depend directly or indirectly on the industry, making the sector the central growth engine.

However, industry's share of gross value added has fallen from 19.0 percent to 14.8 percent since 2016, which is above the national average. HESSENMETAL and HessenChemie have presented a new roadmap to strengthen the industrial location, which focuses on actively shaping the transformation.

Joint efforts are required

The experts emphasize that joint efforts from politics, business and science are required to keep the industry on track. It is particularly important to create framework conditions that promote investment and innovation. These collective efforts are essential to maintain social stability and regional balance.

With a clear perspective, politicians must now not only listen, but also act. This is the only way to secure the industrial base in Hesse and to fulfill the promise of prosperity for future generations. The situation is serious, but together we can turn things around – that is the message for all actors.
