Driving in Hesse: Motor vehicle insurance will increase drastically from 2026!

If you live in Hesse and drive a car, you should wrap up warmly: from 2026 it will be significantly more expensive for around 720,000 car owners in the region. Loud HNA The General Association of the Insurance Industry (GDV) has revised the regional classes for motor vehicle liability insurance, which will lead to higher premiums for many.

In total, changes will be made for 413 registration districts in Germany, with eight registration districts in Hesse being particularly affected. One of the main players is Kassel, which, together with Wiesbaden and Offenbach, is classified in the most unfavorable regional class 12. Around 25% of Hessian vehicle owners have to prepare for a worsened classification in liability insurance, including in Kassel and Wiesbaden.

The details of the regional classes

What does that mean specifically? Vehicles from Kassel, Darmstadt, Wetzlar and other districts will be upgraded. Nevertheless, there is also positive news: The Schwalm-Eder district and the Vogelsberg district have low accident numbers and could therefore benefit from reduced contributions. Information on how the regional classes are calculated can be found at ADAC. The calculation is made by analyzing the damage balances of the respective registration districts.

The regional classes are differentiated not only for liability insurance, but also for partial and fully comprehensive insurance. Lower regional classes can result in cheaper premiums, but drivers should also consider other factors that affect premiums. In order to save money, it might be advisable to change insurance.

A look at the numbers

  • Durchschnittliche Jahresprämie für die Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung 2023: etwa 256 Euro
  • Durchschnittliche Jahresprämie für die Vollkaskoversicherung: ca. 333 Euro
  • Durchschnittliche Jahresprämie für die Teilkaskoversicherung: etwa 82 Euro

Motor vehicle insurance is the largest area within property and casualty insurance in Germany, reported Statista. In 2023, 94 companies were active in this sector, with the largest provider, Allianz, accounting for around 10% of the 70.4 million motor vehicle liability contracts.

Apart from the previous information, it should be noted that the latest adjustments to the damage classes in Hesse only took place in February 2025. Drivers are therefore well advised to take a close look at their insurance contracts before the new conditions take effect.

Don't miss the deadline and remember: The notice period for contracts that are to apply from January 1, 2026 ends on November 30, 2025. Find out about the new contribution framework in good time!
