Kassel in a state of emergency: ASB causes major damage with dramatic scenarios!

On June 28, 2025, an impressive disaster control exercise was carried out in Kassel, which gave the emergency services of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) the opportunity to train under realistic conditions. There were three challenging scenarios on the program, which represented a real test for the around 900 participants. The ASB organized this exercise as part of the federal exercise that takes place every three years, which is one of the most important training measures in civil population protection.

The focus of the exercise was a staged train accident at Kassel main station. A derailed regional train left the emergency services with their hands full. Around 100 extras with realistically made-up injuries ensured that the exercise was extremely lively and challenging. The volunteers not only had to ensure medical care for the injured, but also ensure the coordination of operations among the various rescue services. The total of 650 forces deployed also included technical units, rescue dog squads and even drone teams that supported the search for missing people.

Diverse scenarios

The exercise included not only the train crash, but also an additional scenario in which rescue dogs searched for missing people in a forested area. This fictional balloon crash near Hercules presented the participants with the task of keeping a cool head and acting quickly, even in difficult terrain. In addition, a capsized boat on the Fulda was simulated, which left several injured people in the water. These diverse situation reports enabled the emergency services to demonstrate their skills in different areas of operation.

However, the water rescue exercise the day before, which took place on June 27th at 4 p.m., was particularly exciting. A barbecue accident was simulated, which prepared the emergency services for the challenges of water rescue. “We want to show that the cooperation between the different modules works and that the ability to operate in complex situations can be demonstrated,” said one of those responsible. Aaron Troschke, known from the Internet, also accompanied the exercise and offered “Hey Aaron!!!” with his YouTube format. Training and studies in crisis management

The ASB federal exercise is not only an opportunity for training, but also an important component for strengthening voluntary commitment among the population. Those interested in studying the topic of emergency management in more detail can even opt for a master's degree in crisis and emergency management. Requirements such as a bachelor's degree in a medical or medical-related field and relevant professional experience are required. These courses prepare graduates to show good skills and make well-founded decisions even in critical situations.

The challenges facing emergency services make it clear: There is no room for mistakes in disaster response. And so in Kassel, not only emergency situations are rehearsed, but also collaboration and communication - the cornerstones of a successful rescue mission.
