Mayor's district meeting: discussions about broadband expansion in Gründau!

On June 24, 2025, the mayoral district assembly of the Main-Kinzig district met in Gründau. In a lively meeting, Christian Litzinger, Mayor of Gelnhausen, was accepted onto the board. Dominik Brasch, the mayor of Bad Soden-Salmünster, will take over as deputy chairman in the future. The outgoing deputy chairman Gerald Helfrich from Gründau was thanked for his many years of commitment, while Markus Kern was officially welcomed as the new mayor of Gründau.

Other board members were also represented at the meeting, including Monika Böttcher (Maintal) and Andreas Bär (Nidderau). A central topic of the meeting was the current status of broadband expansion in the district, which Simone Roth, Managing Director of Broadband Main-Kinzig GmbH, was able to present significantly. The mayors agreed that broadband expansion is not only crucial for economic development, but also for the region's digital future.

Important topics of the exchange

Another key topic was security at public events, presented by representatives of the Main-Kinzig police department. This question is becoming increasingly important given the increasing challenges in the area of public safety.

The exchange and cooperation between the cities and communities in the Main-Kinzig district are significantly promoted through such events. It was repeatedly emphasized that a good flow of information and joint action are necessary in order to efficiently master the challenges that affect municipalities.

Broadband expansion as a joint project

Broadband expansion is not only a technical but also a social issue. At a previous meeting on May 29, 2019 in Waechtersbach, 29 mayors discussed progress in the construction of broadband infrastructure. At that time, a total investment of 17 million euros was promised to advance broadband expansion in 172 commercial areas in the district. However, despite the resources provided, there was negative feedback from companies, which underlines the need for improved coordination and implementation.

In addition, criticism was expressed about the planned shift of financial supervision from the district administrators to the regional councils. District Administrator Thorsten Stolz emphasized that control at the district level is closer to local events, which once again illustrates the importance of local self-government.

The role of mayors could evolve in the future. While they have often acted as a driving force, increased coordination may be necessary, as analysis of the current state of the digital economy shows. The example of Austria shows that broadband expansion there is significantly influenced by various factors, including the availability of the Internet. The EU has already provided funding to advance this issue.

Overall, it is clear that digitalization and broadband expansion must go hand in hand in order to be able to overcome the challenges of modern times. The mayors of the Main-Kinzig district are determined to actively address these issues so that the region does not lose out.
