Mass brawl in Hanau: 20 young people involved – police on duty!

In Hanau, there was a massive fight on Freiheitsplatz on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. According to the Frankfurter Rundschau Between 15 and 20 people were involved in this incident. Shortly after 6:30 p.m., several emergency calls were made to the police, who responded immediately with strong emergency services on site. One man suffered a head wound, while other possible injuries were not immediately known. The investigation into the perpetrators and the background to the brawl is currently underway.

Similar incidents of youth violence are being discussed nationwide. According to a survey by Statista Youth violence reached a peak in 2024 with around 13,800 cases, which is more than twice as many as in 2016. The age groups of 14 to 17 year olds and adolescents (18 to 20 years old) are particularly affected. Experts attribute the increase, among other things, to psychological stress caused by Corona measures.

Brawls and police operations

Two years earlier, on September 6, 2022, serious riots also occurred, this time at the Moers fair in the Wesel district, North Rhine-Westphalia. A large group of young people fought there, resulting in six police officers being injured. The Mercury reported the arrests of two young men, aged 17 and 18, who were involved in the clashes. In a later incident, the youths used irritant gas on the police and threw bottles and glasses. Several criminal cases have been opened against the teenagers as police continue to search for witnesses.

However, the problem of juvenile crime is deeper. In 2024, almost three quarters of young suspects were male, and around 84 percent of those convicted under the age of 21 were also men. This high proportion of men is explained by hormonal circumstances as well as acquired behavior and traditional role models. This raises questions: Should the sanctions in juvenile criminal law be tightened or the age of criminal responsibility be reduced? Experts also advocate for stronger preventive measures through targeted child and youth welfare in order to prevent young people at risk from pursuing a criminal life.

The events in Hanau and the incidents at the Moers fair clearly show how urgent the problem of violence among young people is. While the investigation is ongoing, it remains to be hoped that preventative measures and a rethink in society can prevent such outbreaks of violence in the future.
