The weather in Hesse is taking a dramatic turn this Sunday, July 20, 2025. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a level 3 out of 4 thunderstorm warning. This serious warning mainly affects western and central Hesse, but eastern Hesse should also be prepared for possible storms. Strong thunderstorms are to be expected, particularly in the Vogelsberg district as well as in parts of the Main-Kinzig district and in the western district of Fulda, which has triggered a warning level 2 out of 4 Fulda newspaper reported.
Strong gusts of up to 95 km/h are forecast for the region. In addition, heavy rain of up to 25 liters per square meter per hour is to be expected. It is also possible that large hail and lightning strikes could occur, posing a risk to life. The HNA warns of particular dangers such as falling trees, falling objects and flooding of streets and underpasses.
Forewarnings and outlook
The weather situation must be taken seriously. The DWD issued the first warnings on Wednesday of this week. The effects of these weather storms could be particularly noticeable in the evening and night of Monday. In addition, thunderstorms in a weaker form are expected again on Monday, with maximum temperatures of around 25 degrees expected.
Citizens in the affected regions should prepare for the fact that the thunderstorm activity will not subside immediately. The weather will only calm down on Wednesday night, while intermittent sunshine and temperatures of up to 26 degrees are possible during the day. However, the situation remains tense and it is recommended to avoid dangerous outdoor spaces.
In Hesse, the days before July 20, 2025 were initially characterized by changeable weather, with temperatures fluctuating between 24 and 31 degrees in the period from July 18 to 19. However, the friendly weather on Sunday morning is deceptive, as storm fronts will appear in the afternoon and could ruin the weekend.
