Natural garden campaign in the Odenwald: Over 100 enthusiastic visitors!
The Odenwaldkreis’s “Natural Garden Campaign” caused a big stir this year too. At the event, which took place on the last weekend in June, over 100 visitors were able to pass through the gates of six private gardens in Erbach, Michelstadt and Mossautal. For the organizers, District Administrator Frank Matiaske and climate protection manager Lea Bruder, this is a clear sign of the interest in natural gardens.
The two gave special thanks to the garden owners who opened their gardens. Among the participants were Angelika Gaubatz, Jürgen Roth and Markus Keßler. The event, which has taken place for the fifth time, aims to promote the benefits of gardening close to nature and to intensify the exchange between garden owners and visitors. The positive feedback from guests confirms the success of this initiative, which will be launched again next year - then in Reichelsheim, Fränkisch-Crumbach and Brensbach.
Natural gardens promote biodiversity
But what actually makes a natural garden so special? Natural gardens provide habitat for numerous animals and plants and make a significant contribution to biodiversity. Even small gardens can make a valuable contribution to biodiversity. In times of climate change, which is putting many native species under pressure, this is even more important. Particularly endangered species that rely on specific habitats find a suitable retreat in well-designed natural gardens.
It's not just aesthetic aspects that are important. In contrast to ornamental gardens, which often use exotic plants, natural gardens rely on native flora. These plants require less care and promote the establishment of beneficial insects, while pesticides and artificial fertilizers are taboo. Flowering meadows also play an important role because they provide insects with feeding space and help maintain the natural balance.
Support for natural design
In this context, it is worth taking a look at projects like MOIN STADTNATUR in Hamburg, which was launched by the Loki Schmidt Foundation. This project offers free advice on the natural design of gardens, balconies and open spaces. During an initial meeting, participants receive important information about planting options and care, while a follow-up takes place after a year to discuss progress. Anyone interested can simply contact us by email and consultations usually take place on site or by telephone.
The challenges of climate change, which are already affecting many ecosystems, make the approach of a natural garden culture even more important. With trees, flowering plants and creative retreats for animals, gardens can serve not only as aesthetic oases, but also as important living spaces. Even small areas help to promote nature in the city and create a balance to the increasingly dense buildings.
The next “Natural Garden Campaign” is already eagerly awaited, and the invitation to participate will be sent to interested garden owners from autumn 2025. Because one thing is clear: natural gardens are not only a benefit for the environment, they also make every garden owner an active participant in shaping a more livable future.
