Offenbach is cooking against the flood of garbage: save food and enjoy it!

An exciting event recently sent a strong message against food waste in Offenbach. At a cooking evening at the volunteer center, there was an impressive demonstration of how delicious dishes can be made from rescued food. This campaign was organized as part of the “World Design Capital Frankfurt Rhein Main” event series and makes the valuable work of Foodsharing transparent - an initiative that has been committed to the responsible use of food since 2012. As many know, food waste also contributes to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Between 8 and 10 percent of man-made emissions worldwide can be attributed to this problem. In Offenbach, food rescue can be learned and implemented daily through the efforts of the food sharing association, which cooperates with around 55 local businesses, and around 170 volunteers, the so-called food savers. During the cooking campaign, participants were invited to prepare dishes such as minestrone and creamy cauliflower soup using rescued food such as fresh vegetables that were actually destined for the trash, and to put their cooking skills to the test in the process.

Focus on food rescue

To make the campaign even more tangible, the ingredients for the dishes came from regional markets and small businesses, including a family gardener and a coffee roaster. Participating in the cooking event was not only a way to save money, but also part of a necessary movement. Rising prices make food sharing more attractive than ever, confirm the numerous committed participants.

What many may not know: The Foodsharing community has grown from a few hundred to over 500,000 members over the last eleven years. The organization has over 15,000 cooperation partners and carries out around 7,500 food rescues every day.

Food waste background

A current study shows that around 10.8 million tonnes of food waste is generated annually in Germany. Private households account for 58 percent, which means an average of 74.5 kilograms of food per consumer per year. The majority of this waste could be avoided through correct action. Different sectors are affected: Primary production contributes 2 percent, processing 15 percent and out-of-home catering 18 percent of the waste.

By highlighting alternatives such as the campaign series in Offenbach and the ongoing work of food sharing, not only is awareness created, but active work is being done to change this untenable situation. Because the goal is clear: save food, save money and make a contribution to combating food waste - we should all take that to heart!
