On Monday, August 17, 2025, schools in Hesse will start the new school year 2025/2026. Education is now a priority! As Osthessen News reports, the Ministry of Education, led by Armin Schwarz, has put together a comprehensive program to improve the educational landscape. With over 650 million euros, the focus will be on social education and special education offerings as well as language support.
One highlight of the innovations is the introduction of compulsory preliminary German courses for children with language deficits, who should experience better school integration. In addition, the school environment is becoming safer: there is now a strict ban on the use of smartphones, tablets and smartwatches in public schools. Digital devices may be used in class, but violations may result in confiscation until the end of the school day.
Health prevention and innovative programs
Health promotion for teachers is bundled through a “Healthy School” competence center. This not only addresses the needs of teachers, but also expands psychological care with 155 new positions. In addition, an AI chatbot called “telli” is used via the Hesse school portal to support both teachers and students.
In order to promote students' mathematical skills, the digital diagnostic tool “Do Maths Confidently – Online Check” will be introduced in grades 4 to 6. The aim is to capture basic skills and promote them in a targeted manner. Overall, over 5.8 billion euros flow into education, and stable teaching provision is guaranteed with around 61,660 teachers.
All-day offers and values education
More than 87% of schools in Hesse have already set up full-day programs, supported by 5,300 positions for teachers. Values and democracy education will also be strengthened through the introduction of the WERTvoll platform. This clearly shows that education not only imparts knowledge, but also promotes social skills and values.
Another exciting project is “Triad: primary school meets vocational school and crafts”, which is intended to promote skilled craftsmen. The revival for young people in 390 schools – an increase of 77% compared to the previous year – rounds off the broad program.
