Fatal accident on B452: 51-year-old dies in tree crash!

A tragic traffic accident shook the region between Eschwege and Reichensachsen in the Werra-Meißner district on June 13, 2025. A 51-year-old man from Melsungen came off the road on federal highway 452 at around 9:30 a.m. for reasons that are still unclear and crashed head-on into a tree. This is reported by the HNA. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. His vehicle caught fire and burned out completely.

This sad incident was not without consequences. The resulting backlog resulted in a subsequent accident involving three motorcyclists. While the first motorcyclist was able to brake in time, the second drove into the motorcycle in front and was injured. The third driver was lucky and was able to stop in time. Due to the extinguishing work and the accident investigation, federal highway 452 had to be completely closed until 12:45 p.m., which led to further traffic delays.

Causes and statistics

The exact causes of the accident have not yet been conclusively clarified. The public prosecutor's office has already commissioned experts to investigate the accident in detail. In Germany, the current statistics show Statista that around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in 2023. These include both accidents with property damage and those with personal injury, with the number of road deaths remaining at a similar level to 1955.

According to the Destatis Road safety in Germany is improved through regular accident data. The aim is to understand the structures of accidents and to develop measures in various areas such as road construction and traffic education. A great focus is on the EU's “Vision Zero”, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2050.

The most common causes of accidents with personal injuries include insufficient distance, improper speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2023 alone, there were around 15,700 accidents with alcohol-related personal injuries, which underlines the importance of educational work in road traffic.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the driver involved in the accident as the investigation continues and questions about road safety in the region are raised again.
