Patrick Krug visits Windbergschule: A look into the future of education!
On November 8, 2025, the Windbergschule in Freiensteinau was a very special place when the first district councilor Patrick Krug visited the school. Around 50 students welcomed him with cheerful singing and self-written poems, which underlined the warm atmosphere of the school. Krug is currently on the road to get to know all 38 schools in the Vogelsberg district and to identify potential for improvement. As oberhessen-live.de reports, the focus of his visit was on the exciting everyday school life and the numerous initiatives that are being implemented here.
The headmistress Silvia Röll-Grätz presented the Windbergschule's wide range of all-day offerings. Over 80 percent of the approximately 100 students take part in the offerings, which are supplemented by cooperation with rural women. This initiative offers second and third grade students a nutrition guide that introduces them to the world of healthy eating in a playful way. Exercise and a balanced diet play a central role in the school's concept: Here the children not only learn how to prepare healthy snacks, but also how to grow fruit and vegetables in the school garden.
Focus on digitalization and environmental education
But it's not just nutrition that is important. The Windbergschule also relies on digitalization by intensively using iPads in lessons. In this way, the students not only acquire knowledge, but also important media skills. Another highlight is the Internet ABC exam for the fourth grade, which is intended to strengthen the students' Internet skills.
Environmental education is promoted by an environmental group and a comprehensive environmental concept. The students benefit from this commitment, which is supported with great passion by the teachers. Krug was visibly impressed by the projects and the high level of commitment of all employees at the school. It is clear to see that the Windbergschule plays a pioneering role in the areas of nutrition, exercise and digital education.
All-day offers in the school sector
In general, all-day offers like those at the Windbergschule are of great importance for the development of children. As the bmftr.bund.de explains, these offers not only promote the children's technical skills, but also their social and individual skills. The federal government has been supporting the expansion of such programs for years in order to relieve the burden on families with fewer resources and to improve the family climate. From August 1, 2026, all children of primary school age have a legal right to full-day care.
Overall, over 70 percent of general education schools in Germany already offer full-day programs, a trend that is expected to become even more solid in the coming years. The Windbergschule in Freiensteinau impressively shows how such programs can be successfully implemented and have a positive effect on the academic and personal development of children.
