Complete closure of the B 254: Effects of the renovation until October 2025!

Sustainable transport infrastructure is very important in Hesse: With the start of the summer holidays, renovation work on the B 254 between Alsfeld and Lauterbach began. According to Hessen.de, the construction project, which began on July 7, 2025, is proceeding according to plan. The aging section over a length of around 2.9 km will be renovated in several sections in order to repair the numerous road damage such as network cracks and ruts.

The first construction phase, which lasts until the end of the Hessian summer holidays, requires the federal highway to be completely closed. The diversion route for road users coming from the direction of Lauterbach leads via Brauerschwend, Rainrod and Eifa directly to Alsfeld. Conversely, traffic from Alsfeld is redirected via the B 49 to Romrod and then through a number of districts in order to continue to reach the B 254. These measures were coordinated in advance with those involved in order to make traffic flow as pleasant as possible, as Vogelsberger Zeitung states.

Planned construction phases and diversions

The second construction phase, which begins next week, affects the junction of the B 254 with the L 3145 and the commercial area in Alsfeld/Altenburg. Traffic from Lauterbach will continue to be redirected here, while traffic from Alsfeld to Lauterbach will now be routed via one-way regulations in the construction site areas. This setting will also remain in the third construction phase between Altenburg and the Elpersweide roundabout. Hessen Mobil will regularly provide information about progress and changes so that residents can adapt to the changed traffic routing in good time.

  • Bauabschnitt 1: Freie Strecke zwischen Schwalmtal/Hopfgarten und Altenburg bis Ende der hessischen Sommerferien.
  • Bauabschnitt 2: Knotenpunkt B 254/L 3145/Gewerbegebiet.
  • Bauabschnitt 3: Strecke zwischen Altenburg und Kreisverkehrsplatz Elpersweide.

Overall, the construction work is being funded by the Federal Republic of Germany with an investment volume of around 2.3 million euros. This major renovation is scheduled to be completed in October 2025. These maintenance measures are necessary to prevent major damage and more costly repairs in the future, according to Marktkorb.

In East Hesse, a total of 39 construction projects on federal, state and district roads are planned for the coming year, with a total volume of 21 million euros. These include both larger projects and small measures, all of which serve to make the transport infrastructure fit for the future. The region will not only benefit in the short term from the renovation work on the B 254, but long-term investments will also be made in traffic safety and quality.

Road users are asked to adapt to the changed traffic routing and to allow enough time for diversions. In this way, together we can overcome the challenges of the construction work and the roads can soon be used again in their best condition.
