Construction site nightmare in Korbach: Serial thieves leave behind millions in damage!

In Korbach there is currently an increasing number of thefts on construction sites. Between June 17th and 20th, four different incidents were registered that brought the local police to the scene. An initial assessment revealed that unknown perpetrators were primarily targeting building materials and construction equipment. 112-magazin.de reports that the perpetrators cut through a fence on Christian-Paul-Strasse and took valuable stolen goods.

A total of four 20-liter canisters of diesel fuel and a Wacker Neuson hydraulic chisel were stolen. The thieves also got their hands on two vibrating plates and around 20 construction site barriers on the same street. The police assume that the incidents are related to a crime and that the perpetrators were using a suitable vehicle to transport the stolen goods.

A wide range of thefts

But that's not all: the police also reported the loss of five plastic panels in Waldmannsbreite, which were needed for the fiber optic expansion. Around ten red and white barrier beacons disappeared on Strother Street. The total value of the stolen materials amounts to several thousand euros. The unknown men appear to be using increasingly sophisticated methods to loot construction sites, underscoring a growing security problem in the region.

Like the current one Bauwatch study shows, many construction site managers also see an increasing risk. In a survey of 500 experts, two thirds said that they had observed more thefts on construction sites in 2023. Striking: 80% of those surveyed report at least one theft per year. These figures underline that construction site crime is a serious issue.

The consequences for the construction industry

The damage caused by theft in the German construction industry is estimated at over 80 million euros. Uncertainty arises not only financially, but also in terms of morale and project progress. Almost a quarter of those surveyed say that construction sites are delayed by up to four weeks due to such incidents. In one out of eight cases it even happens that construction projects cannot be continued.

Despite significant risks, safety on construction sites is often classified as a “low priority”. Experts recommend that security measures such as camera towers, good lighting and a clear communication strategy should be implemented before construction begins to ensure protection against thieves.

The police in Korbach are asking for the public's help: Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to contact the Korbach police station on 05631-9710. A collaborative approach could be crucial here.

Stay vigilant and protect your construction sites. A good knack for security planning can make a difference.
