Bird flu chaos in Frankenau: breeders desperate and angry!
In the Waldeck-Frankenberg region, the mood among the breeders of the Frankenau Poultry Breeding Association is anything but cheerful. The approximately 50 active members are faced with serious challenges with the obligation to stay in stables, which was imposed due to bird flu. Jörg Wilhelmi, a member of the association, expressed concern and described the situation as “absolutely catastrophic”. Despite the difficult circumstances, breeders show understanding for the measures taken by the veterinary office to prevent the spread of the virus, as HNA reports.
In order to allow the animals a certain degree of freedom of movement despite the obligation to stay in the stable, there have already been discussions with the veterinary office. Suggestions for structural changes, such as wind protection nets, are being discussed. Waterfowl farmers are particularly concerned because keeping them in stables is problematic for them. Some breeders have announced that they will reduce their stocks in the short term to meet requirements. At the same time, access to the breeding facility was closed to visitors, a measure intended to ensure both safety and hygiene.
The effects of the stable requirement
The planned poultry exhibition and the bullfinch pigeon club show on November 15th and 16th had to be canceled, a decision that was not met with understanding by all club members. Wilhelmi emphasizes the responsibility they have for the animals and the importance of the daily joy of breeding. To date, there have been no killings of animals at the Frankenau Poultry Breeding Association, which has so far ruled out any financial damage. However, the emotional damage caused by bird flu is considered to be more serious, according to the association's monthly meeting.
In this time of upheaval, it is important that breeders stick together and try to make the best of the situation. It is a challenge that also pushes the limits of understanding. Ultimately, decisions are made that affect the future of breeding and the welfare of the animals. It is necessary not to lose courage even in difficult times and to continue to look for solutions.
