Excessive violence on a regional train: Four men beat a 52-year-old!

An incident occurred on a regional train between Sontra (Werra-Meißner district) late on Friday evening, June 27, 2025, which once again brought the safety situation in local public transport into focus. Four men got into an argument that initially started verbally but quickly turned into physical altercations. A 52-year-old was attacked by three other passengers aged 29 to 41 and suffered minor injuries that did not require medical attention. The train driver, who considered the situation threatening, called the police and left his cab for safety reasons when the attackers tried to break in. According to Borkener Zeitung, the police, who were on the scene immediately, were able to calm the situation.

An additional incident occurred at Sontra train station, where a 33-year-old pulled the emergency brake. The reason for this was an alleged problem with the train's doors not opening. However, the specific circumstances that led to this emergency act were not further investigated. The Kassel Federal Police Inspectorate took over the investigation, which now focuses on bodily harm and misuse of emergency aid facilities. Witnesses are asked to call 0561-81616 0 to help clarify the matter, as Presseportal reports.

Feeling unsafe in local transport

Before this incident, a discussion about safety on public transport unfolded. A current study by the Federal Criminal Police Office shows that more than half of women and almost a quarter of men avoid local transport at night for safety reasons. Around 50% of the population feel unsafe without someone accompanying them, especially in the evening hours, as Nordkurier states.

The increased number of violent incidents at German train stations is particularly worrying. In 2024, 27,160 violent crimes were recorded, an increase compared to the 25,640 incidents in 2023. Violent crime has increased in cities such as Berlin, Dortmund, Cologne and Munich, significantly affecting travelers' sense of security. Discussions about special women's compartments in local public transport are also ongoing, but have not yet been implemented.

The police have responded to this problem by strengthening security measures through technical upgrades. 11,000 cameras have been installed at 750 train stations, with investments in security measures already amounting to over 180 million euros. However, the question remains as to how people's trust in the safety of local transport can be restored. The events on the regional train on Friday evening show that there is still a lot to be done to protect citizens in public spaces.
