New VlV Safer Space” in Eschwege: A place for diversity and encounters!
On October 8, 2025, a very special place was brought to life at Marktstrasse 29a in Eschwege: the “VlV Safer Space”. At the ceremonial opening, around 50 visitors came together to welcome this space, which emerged from the pop-up art project “Viva la Vulva” as part of the city center festival “Art and Culture in Vacancy”. This initiative brings a breath of fresh air to Eschweg's city center and sets clear accents in the areas of feminism, equality, diversity and anti-discrimination.
The “VlV Safer Space” is more than just a room – it offers the opportunity for open exchange, creative workshops and community activities. A special highlight at the opening was the exhibition “Queer Living Worlds in the Werra-Meißner District”, which will be on display until the end of the project. The initiators agree: The goal is to create a long-term meeting place where social discourse can be initiated and creative impulses for solidarity can be provided.
Artistic creativity and education
The “VlV Safer Space” team has a variety of planned offerings, ranging from artistic activities and café formats to lectures and workshops. Here people can come together to exchange their thoughts and ideas and create things together. The next days of action have already been scheduled until November 9th, and everyone interested is cordially invited to take part.
The documentary “Viva la Vulva” provides an important background to this. The film deals intensively with female sexuality and examines numerous historical, cultural and political aspects surrounding the vulva. This is discussed as a symbol of women's self-determination and illuminates the cultural negation of the vulva within patriarchal structures. This perspective is also clearly implemented in the room and underlines the importance of the topic in today's society.
A space for exchange
As part of the “VlV Safer Space”, the vulva is viewed not only as a symbolic representation of gender identity, but also as a mystical source of life, which is also seen as a threat to patriarchal norms. Here, visitors have the opportunity to engage with the often critical topics that the film raises. Meanwhile, a new and self-confident self-image for women is promoted, which creates hope for self-determined female sexuality.
The “VlV Safer Space” is an important step in the right direction. There are exciting times ahead when this space can act as a platform for many creative and social activities. The team has a good knack for creating a network that brings women and everyone interested together and celebrates diversity. It remains to be seen which projects will grow in this exciting environment.
