Volunteer hero Günter Schultheis receives citizens' award in Upper Hesse!
In a ceremonial setting, the Sparkasse Oberhessen recently honored committed personalities from the Wetterau district with its Citizens' Prize. Among the award winners was 68-year-old Günter Schultheis from Reichelsheim, who was honored for his outstanding commitment to KSG Bönstadt. Schultheis, who has been active in his club in various roles for 60 years, received the recognition award in the “Everyday Hero” category and expressed his surprise at the award.
The award ceremony took place on Tuesday evening in the Altes Hallenbad Theater in Friedberg, where a total of twelve personalities and institutions were honored. Schultheis has taken on almost every role in the club - from player to groundskeeper to 30 years on the board. This shows that when it comes down to it, he rolls up his sleeves and gets stuck in. Over the last six decades, his commitment has not only been intensive, but also entirely voluntary. “I only ever took over when I was needed,” he explains.
A life for the community
Born in Bönstadt in 1957, Schultheis was rooted in club life from an early age. In 1964 he started playing football in the KSG youth team, influenced by parents who were also involved. He later took over the job of groundskeeper from his father, which tied him even closer to the community. “A very special highlight was the opening game of our sports field against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1987,” says Schultheis, looking back.
He has had a remarkable career: After military service in the Navy and training as a toolmaker, he worked at Subaru in Friedberg until his retirement in 2021. He has lived in Dorn-Assenheim since 1993 with his wife Barbara, with whom he has been married since 1982. Schultheis would like young people to also find their way into volunteer work, because this is the only way club life can thrive.
Appreciation for volunteer work
The Upper Hesse Citizens' Prize is in itself a nice gesture, with a total prize money of 9,000 euros, which was awarded in various categories. During the event, District Administrator Jan Weckler (CDU) emphasized the importance of volunteer work, especially in times of crisis. "It's not always easy to find committed young people for the clubs. But such events are intended to express gratitude and encourage others to do the same," he explained.
The winners in the “Everyday Heroes” category combine a variety of remarkable achievements. In addition to Schultheis, Dieter Leibold from Glauburg and Hartmut Schenk from Florstadt also received recognition for their commitment. Main prizes went to Waltraud Sulzbach and Erika Krämer, who are passionate about the Concordia Rockenberg singing club.
Günter Schultheis hopes that with his honor he can be a role model for others and show how important it is to stand up for the community. His motto in life couldn't be more apt: “Volunteering is valuable and everyone can be a part of it.”
