Karbener Friedenschor: Melodies for understanding and cohesion!

Something exciting is happening in the area of culture and solidarity in Karben! The Karbener Friedenschor, which was founded under the motto “Peaceful into the New Year”, uses its singing to promote understanding and cohesion. This is reported by the FNP. The choir is part of the “We – united for peace and freedom” initiative and currently has ten members. Their regular rehearsals take place in the creative environment of Peter Mayer's Kuhtelier.

The peace choir was founded as a spontaneous reaction to the Ukraine war that broke out in February 2022. The idea of continuing the initiative in the long term came about at the Peace Light on New Year's Day 2025. The first rehearsal of 2026, however, will not take place until the second Monday in April, as choir director Elke Lange-Helfrich, who accompanies with her guitar, is traveling to India. A look at the repertoire shows that it includes around 50 songs, including classics like “Imagine” by John Lennon, but without any political lyrics.

One day for Ukraine

Support for refugees from Ukraine remains a central issue in Karben. Currently 173 people have found shelter in the city, reports Karben newspaper. To promote relief efforts, the “Karben Helps” initiative recently held a fundraising and cultural event in the community center called “A Day for Ukraine.” The event was organized by the aforementioned Elke Lange-Helfrich, who is not only involved as a choir director but also as an active supporter of refugee aid.

The highlights of the evening included performances by various artists and groups, including the “Duo Herzgold” and the youth orchestra “Attacca”. A peace choir also performed with 13 singers from different choirs. The event was a complete success. In total, over 1,400 euros were collected through various campaigns, such as the sale of pictures and solidarity ribbons.

Help and support in Karben

The “Karben Helps” action alliance is an association of several groups and institutions in Karben that have set themselves the goal of helping refugees as best as possible. Under the coordination of city councilor Heike Liebel, not only the placement of housing but also the social integration of refugees is being promoted. The weekly “Karben Helps” meetings, which take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the Kuhtelier, provide important support.

The reports from those affected, such as Fritz Amann and Natalya Balandina, underline the urgency of support and remind us of the personal fates behind the statistics. Balandina described the challenges of turning her back on her homeland and the bitter truth that her mother remains in Ukraine.

During this time it becomes clear: whether through music or in everyday life - the people of Karben show a strong sense of community and a great commitment to peace and support. Anyone who is interested in joining the Peace Choir or helping actively can contact Peter Mayer or Elke Lange-Helfrich by email.
