A children's festival for everyone: barrier-free fun at the Schlachthof Wiesbaden!

On Saturday, June 21st, the Schlachthof cultural center in Wiesbaden will be transformed into a colorful playground for all children, regardless of disability, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The motto of this year's children's festival is: “Absolutely barrier-free – EVERYONE is welcome!”. This event brings children together and promotes exchange between different realities of life. Herzenswärme organizes this special event, supported by various partners such as Rollis Rhein-Main, the Wiesbadener Werkstätten and VC Wiesbaden. The patron of the event is Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.

An exciting program awaits the young visitors. These include activities such as wheelchair basketball, goal wall shooting, a blind course and a bobby car course. Clown Filou will also provide entertainment and the wheel of fortune will offer prizes for the winners. Information stands on topics such as inclusion and diversity will also be placed on site. And the best part? All activities are free!

Focus on sports inclusion

In connection with the sporting promotion, the new school project “Move it” by the Rhine River Rhinos Wiesbaden and the IKK Südwest will also be highlighted. The aim of this project is to familiarize students of all ages with the inclusive sport of wheelchair basketball. In this way, young people should get to know the life and sports world of disabled athletes and reduce their fear of contact. Daniel Volksheimer, regional director of IKK Südwest, emphasizes the importance of exercise and team spirit, while Mirko Korder, manager of the Rhine River Rhinos, emphasizes the social relevance of the project.

This approach is no coincidence, as accessibility is crucial for the equal participation of people with disabilities in sport. The German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) warns that not only structural, but also digital, communicative and social barriers must be broken down. It is time for athletes with and without disabilities to be able to meet on equal terms. An important goal of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) is to promote inclusion in sport, and the removal of “barriers in people’s minds” also plays an important role here.

The invitation to the children's festival in the slaughterhouse and the initiatives such as the “Move it” project show that a lot is happening in Wiesbaden. We are working on inclusive and barrier-free coexistence - not only through events, but also through sustainable educational projects that bring young people closer to the world of sport.
