Violence in society

Unfortunately, the incident in Wiesbaden is not isolated. Violent crime accounts for less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police in Germany, but threatens the population's sense of security more than other crimes such as theft or fraud. Around 217,000 violent crimes were recorded in 2024, the highest number since 2007, while numbers had fallen in previous years. Since 2021, the numbers have been rising again and are almost a third above the low of 2021 during the corona pandemic, like Statista communicates.

The reasons for this increase could be diverse, ranging from economic uncertainties to social pressures. What is particularly striking is the increase in young violent criminals, whose proportion of suspects has increased since 2021. This highlights the ongoing psychological stress that many people, especially young adults, have experienced as a result of the Corona measures.

The conflicts in Wiesbaden should remind us how important it is to seek dialogue and resolve conflicts peacefully. Any kind of violence is a step in the wrong direction and only serves to further inflame tensions in our society.
