The driver of a white van overlooked them when he wanted to turn right from Rheingaustraße into Äppelallee, reports Wiesbaden Current. First responders and the emergency services immediately initiated life-sustaining measures, but here too the exact course of events remains unclear.
The issue of road safety for cyclists is becoming more and more pressing. Last year, one in six people killed in road traffic were cyclists, and the sad trend shows that the number of fatal accidents among Pedelec users is constantly increasing. Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office show that a total of 441 cyclists died in accidents in 2024, including a serious 192 Pedelec riders. About 63.5% of fatally injured cyclists were 65 years or older.
The need for government action
The ever-increasing number of accidents highlights the need to improve the infrastructure for cyclists. 67.7% of bicycle accidents resulting in personal injury involved other road users, and it was often drivers who were responsible for the collisions.
It remains to be hoped that the investigation into these two tragic accidents in Wiesbaden will help to increase safety on the roads and that measures will be taken to better protect cyclists. This is important not only for those affected, but also for the entire transport community.
