20 million euros for start-up factory: Lower Saxony is focusing on the future!
There is a lot going on in the start-up sector in the heart of Lower Saxony. The “GOe FUTURE” project recently received strong funding of 20 million euros to stimulate the upswing in the start-up sector. This significant investment consists of 10 million euros of private capital and a further subsidy of 10 million euros from the federal government, as NDR reported. The goal is ambitious: the number of start-ups in the city triangle of Hanover, Göttingen and Braunschweig is to be doubled in the coming years.
The start-up factory “GOe FUTURE” focuses on the life sciences. The number of new companies in this area is expected to rise to over 100 within the next five years. Life sciences encompass various research areas located in medicine and biology and are crucial to the well-being and health of humanity, according to the website of LifeScience Valley explained.
Science meets business
A special feature of “GOe FUTURE” is the close cooperation between universities and companies. A total of 13 universities, including the universities of Göttingen and Hanover, as well as 14 companies are involved in the project. This also includes renowned institutions such as the Hannover Medical School and various Max Planck, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz and Leibniz institutes. These partnerships are intended to lead to better networking between science and practice.
Another interesting aspect is that two thirds of the new, growth-oriented companies will come from rural areas. Lower Saxony also plans to invest 18.5 million euros in research, young talent and technology transfer in the coming years. Among other things, the Braunschweig “Recycling Factory” is mentioned, which converts 3D printing waste into new material and thus makes a contribution to sustainability.
Support for founders
The new research magazine at Leibniz University Hannover also plays an important role in supporting founders. The current issue entitled "How to start a business? Research, funding and role models" focuses on support for founders in the transition from science to business. How Hannover.de reports, the magazine contains information about the steps from the idea to the start-up as well as the assessment of start-up ideas.
The university has built a comprehensive start-up ecosystem in collaboration with business players. These include, among other things, start-up workshops, the use of rooms and laboratories as well as access to the ONE Tech Campus in Garbsen. Information about EXIST start-up grants is also part of the offer. In order to strengthen start-up skills, this topic is even being integrated into the curricula of the degree programs. In this way, basic knowledge for future founders is promoted right from the start.
With these initiatives and investments, Lower Saxony has the potential to establish itself as a leading location for start-ups in the life sciences and to put innovative ideas into practice. Anyone interested in the future should take a closer look here – there is a lot of potential in the air!
