Drama in the stable: Fire brigade saves cows from dangerous manure pit!

On Wednesday morning, December 30, 2025, the fire department in Aurich was called to a dramatic operation. Two cows had broken into a manure pit under a stable and were in danger of drowning in the tough material. The farmer noticed the accident at 10:20 a.m. and acted quickly to alert for help.

The situation was extremely threatening for the animals: they were up to their necks in manure and were already exhausted. The fire department, which arrived quickly on site, decided to pump out some of the manure to make it easier for the cows to be rescued. Equipped with breathing masks and waders, the emergency services descended into the pit to save the cows.

The rescue operation

Particular attention was paid to protecting the animals during the rescue operation. A special rescue harness was put on the cows to safely get them out of their predicament. After around three and a half hours of hard work, during which the emergency services and equipment had to undergo extensive cleaning, they finally managed to lift the cows out of the manure pit using a tractor and a wheel loader.

After the rescue, both cows were immediately examined by two veterinarians on site. Fortunately, the animals were unharmed in the incident. The quick action of the fire brigade and the careful implementation of the rescue measures made a decisive contribution to ensuring that the cows were saved safely.

Follow-up and outlook

The emergency services not only demonstrated courage but also great skill in this operation. It turns out that cooperation between the fire brigade and preparation for such emergencies is important in order to prevent animal suffering. With this successful operation in Aurich, the firefighters can once again pat themselves on the back.

Like the reporting from NDR and NOZ shows, such extraordinary operations are not uncommon in rural areas. Even though the cows were successfully rescued, the incident remains a stark example of the importance of ensuring the safety of animals in agriculture. So let's not only enjoy the happy cows, but also the dedicated emergency services who are ready to help in difficult situations.
