Großfehn in flames: warehouse fire calls for 160 firefighters!
A major fire hit the community of Großefehn in the Aurich district on the night of September 13, 2025. Shortly after midnight, around 12:30 a.m., a fire broke out in a warehouse on a farm and quickly got out of control. Around 160 firefighters were deployed to fight the flames, which were considered particularly challenging because the hall was filled with bales of straw and grain. This made the extinguishing work time-consuming and complex, as [Zeit] reports.
The first emergency services arrived while a large part of the hall was already burning. In order to deal with the acute risk of the hall collapsing, several fire departments from the area were also alerted, including the fire departments from the Leer, Wiesmoor and Aurich districts. A special company with a crawler excavator was also called in to provide support in order to completely demolish the hall that had caught fire. All stored equipment had to be brought outside and extinguished in a controlled manner to prevent the flames from spreading further. The extinguishing work lasted until the early hours of the next morning, and the fire was finally completely extinguished.
Damage and investigations
The damage caused is estimated at over 100,000 euros. In addition to the warehouse, a tractor as well as other equipment and a large number of bales of straw and hay were also destroyed. Fortunately, there have been no injuries so far and the animals in the adjacent stables remained unharmed. The exact cause of the fire is currently unclear; the police immediately began an investigation.
Interestingly, a third of all camp fires are due to arson, which is three times higher than average. Camp fires are a common problem, particularly in agriculture, as easily accessible barns are often affected. Spontaneous combustion of stored material, particularly hay, is another risk that farmers should be aware of (IFS). Regular temperature checks are essential to avoid self-igniting situations.
The incident in Großefehn serves as a warning example of the dangers associated with the storage of agricultural materials. It remains to be seen what conclusions the investigation will draw about the cause of the fire. However, the fire department and all organizations involved showed an impressive commitment to prevent anything worse from happening.
