Bersenbrück: First housing box for homeless people brings hope in winter!
A new chapter for homeless people was opened in Bersenbrück on November 10, 2025. With the opening of the first living box, which bears the name “Little Home”, a hopeful approach is brought to the Osnabrück region. This eight square meter accommodation in the form of a wooden house is used specifically to offer homeless people a safe place to sleep during the cold winter months. The equipment, which includes a mattress, dishes, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit, makes your stay there as pleasant as possible without claiming to replace long-term housing solutions, reports NDR.
The idea for “Little Home” began when they wanted to create safe accommodation for a homeless woman. Now the project is intended to help homeless people get a new start, often in the form of a transition to inpatient facilities. This initiative was funded by a coalition of several regional companies, which shows that there is a strong local awareness of the issue.
Challenges in the housing market
The experts know that the need for such alternatives is particularly high. Almost 42 percent of homeless people are couples with children, which is well above the national average. The tense housing market is a key factor contributing to the critical situation. There are now over 350 such living boxes in Germany, including nine in Lower Saxony, all of which pursue similar goals.
But who are the people who live in these facilities? They are diverse and come from different age groups and backgrounds. This mix is a clear sign that the challenges facing homeless people can affect everyone.
A collaborative approach
What is particularly noteworthy is that the living boxes are built communally. People and companies are working together to help these vulnerable people. This social commitment cannot be valued highly enough - because it is often the first step in giving those affected a piece of quality of life back.
Given the increasing number of homeless people in our country, the project shows how important local initiatives are to find solutions together. The “Little Home” initiative in Bersenbrück is great proof that civil society and business can work hand in hand to address acute problems and provide hope. Every initiative, no matter how small, helps improve the lives of people in need.
A lot remains to be done, but the first steps have been taken. If things continue like this, the Little Home could soon be the first of many small refuges in the region that will have great meaning for many.
