Construction site in Braunschweig: Glückskinder outlet closes after years!
In Braunschweig, the shovels and machines have been unpacked for a few weeks, because there is a lot of work going on on Helmstedter Straße. The work not only gives the road a new shine, but also brings with it new cycle paths and sidewalks. But the renovation measures have far-reaching consequences: months of diversions, closures and a lack of parking are the logical consequence. This not only affects residents, but also local shops, such as the popular children's specialty store “Glückskinder”.
After six years, the outlet on Helmstedter Straße, which has existed since 2019, is saying goodbye and closing its doors on November 30th. The reason for this is the ongoing construction work. Even if the main business in the Magniviertel region is still there for customers, there is great dissatisfaction about the effects of the construction site. Customers criticize that accessibility to the shops is severely restricted during the work, as motorized traffic is no longer permitted between Steintorwall and Kastanienallee - with the exception of emergency vehicles. Residents and businesses can only be reached via temporary sidewalks, which doesn't make the situation any easier. “Glückskinder” has now launched a “construction site clearance sale” to make the best possible use of the last few weeks until the closure.
Traffic disruptions and diversions
However, there are not only local restrictions in the middle of the construction site on Helmstedter Straße. Other streets in Braunschweig are also affected: For example, Bienroder Weg and Bültenweg are closed until the end of 2026. The construction sites make it essential to designate diversions to keep traffic moving. This could be a challenge for commuters and drivers, not least due to the changed traffic routing on Hamburger Straße, where turning options are limited.
The city plans to complete the measures on Helmstedter Strasse within a year, which would mean that the diversions will remain in place for a long time. The situation is sometimes dramatic for the affected businesses in the area. A closure like “Glückskinder” could be a foretaste of what other stores could also experience. Bus route 413 is also being rerouted via Jasperallee to accommodate the construction work. The patience of citizens and business owners will be tested as they adapt to new circumstances.
The construction work and the associated restrictions come at a time when people actually want to look forward to autumn and the upcoming festivities. But with the challenges that the construction sites bring with them, a lot is demanded of residents and businesses.
Against this background, everyone involved hopes that the construction work will end soon and that normality will return to Helmstedter Strasse - because ultimately, life in Braunschweig should not only be characterized by construction sites.
