Driving under the influence of drugs: Dangerous accidents in our region!
A 19-year-old driver was involved in an accident on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, on Autobahn 1 near Emstek. According to information from OM Online The young man fell asleep at the wheel while driving and crashed into the guardrail. This is just one of the numerous reports from the region that illustrate the challenges and dangers in road traffic.
Accidents are often the result of carelessness, as another example shows: On Monday, September 15th, there was a serious accident in Friesoythe in which two people were injured. The trend of traffic accidents caused by distraction, fatigue or even drug use is worrying. Drugs in traffic in particular are an increasingly explosive issue.
Drugs in traffic – a growing problem
Police warn urgently about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs. Even the consumption of illegal drugs such as cannabis, heroin or cocaine constitutes an administrative offense, as the information portal says police explained. Not only are there fines of up to 1,500 euros, but also driving bans of one to three months. In the case of drug-related driving errors that lead to danger or accidents, the consequences can be even more serious: up to five years in prison are possible.
A current dark field study by the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV) brings frightening figures to light: It is estimated that around 250,000 people drove a vehicle under the influence of drugs in 2023, but there were only 8,676 reports. This represents just 3% of the estimated number of drug drivers, meaning a large proportion remain undetected. There is therefore a need for action in Austria to improve drug detection, inspired by European models. The need for appropriate equipment and processes to detect these traffic risks is obvious KFV.
Road safety in focus
Recent incidents in the region are drawing attention to road safety. Two break-ins were also reported in Cloppenburg on Monday: In one, a cash box and cash were stolen from a residential building, which increases the need to support each other in the community. Several fatal incidents were also recorded, including a 24-year-old driver who was on drugs without a license and responded positively to a drug test. Such cases are just the tip of the iceberg.
Measures to raise awareness about the risks of drugs in traffic must be strengthened. In addition to technical improvements, it is important that the population is made aware of the dangers. Because traveling by road should be safe – for everyone. Only together can we ensure that our roads become less dangerous.
