Dramatic burglary attempts in Cuxhaven: police quickly reach their destination thanks to witnesses!

On the night of today, June 25, 2025, there was an attempted break-in in Cuxhaven, which was stopped by attentive residents. At around 1:45 a.m., two conscious citizens noticed suspicious noises coming from a shop on Grüner Weg and immediately informed the police. Their quick action led to the law enforcement agency responsible for the city's security reacting immediately and launching a manhunt in the area.

After the initial investigation, residents reported three people who had left the scene. Thanks to the precise information, the police were able to quickly locate the suspected perpetrators, two Cuxhaven-based men aged 19 and 21 and a 25-year-old, in the surrounding area. But the break-in was, fortunately, not successful. There was no entry into the store, which shows that the vigilant eye of the citizens was crucial.

Burglary numbers and their meaning

Burglaries are a big issue in Germany. According to Statista, around 119,000 cases of theft in and out of apartments were registered in 2023, with around 77,800 of them classified as residential burglaries. This is not a harmless offense: a break-in not only causes material damage, but also violations of privacy and a sense of security. The psychological consequences that the victim has to endure are often significant.

The numbers speak for themselves: 2023 was the second year in a row in which the number of residential burglaries increased, reaching the highest level since 2019. It is alarming that the highest risk of burglary is found in urban states such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg, while Bavaria has the lowest rates. For example, Mülheim an der Ruhr has the highest burglary rate with 283 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - these are numbers that should make us think.

A challenge for the police

Although the police in Cuxhaven arrested the three suspects, they were released after checking the reasons for their detention. This is a challenge that law enforcement officers often face. The clearance rate for residential burglaries was only 14.9% in 2023. In comparison, the overall clearance rate for all crimes is 58.4%. These figures make it clear how important cooperation between the population and the police is.
