Major traffic control at the Weser Tunnel: drugs and alcohol exposed!

Safety is very important in the Cuxhaven district, as an impressive traffic control at the Weser Tunnel proves. On Friday evening, October 12, 2025, police and customs carried out a large-scale inspection in which around 500 vehicles were examined. For over six hours, around 50 emergency services were active as part of this operation, which was organized by the Schiffdorf Police Department, supported by other police departments and the Hanover Central Police Department. The Bremerhaven Technical Relief Agency (THW) and the Brake road maintenance department were also actively involved.

The check was carried out shortly after the exit to the A27 and was aimed at checking the road users' ability to drive. The focus was on determining the influence of alcohol and drug use as well as the validity of the driving license. Particular attention was also paid to the fact that customs officers had expanded powers, which enabled them to carry out checks and searches regardless of suspicion. Two police dogs, including a sniffer dog and a personal protection dog, supported the emergency services on site.

Results of the control

The record of scrutiny is both revealing and worrying. Three drivers were found to have consumed drugs, while another driver was drunk and had to promptly surrender his driver's license. A total of four people were required to provide a blood sample. The officers also found two vehicles that did not have valid insurance, which is why their license plates were removed. Technical changes were discovered on five other cars, which led to the expiration of the operating license - two of these vehicles were seized for closer inspection.

  • Fahrzeugführer unter Drogeneinfluss: 3
  • Alkoholisierte Fahrer: 1
  • Blutproben abgenommen: 4
  • Fahrzeuge ohne Versicherung: 2
  • Technisch veränderte Fahrzeuge: 5
  • Steuerrechtliche Verstöße registriert: 4

What is particularly positive is that speeding violations have decreased significantly compared to the previous year: only four speeding violations were recorded, compared to over 50 last year. The maximum permissible speed of 30 km/h before and at the checkpoint was therefore observed by most drivers.

Additional insights from incidents

The willingness of the police and customs to cooperate during such checks shows how seriously the authorities take road safety and take a joint approach to combat alcohol and drug abuse on the road. According to the experiences and results as reported by CNV Media and nwzonline summarized, it is clear that such measures contribute not only to deterrence but also to raising awareness among road users.
