Emsland promotes youth participation: Democracy needs strong voices!
In the Emsland district, youth participation is very important - the new funding program “Shaping the Future – Young Voices for a Strong Democracy” brings a breath of fresh air into the political landscape. The aim of the program is to give young people more space, voice and opportunities to actively participate in democracy. First District Councilor Martin Gerenkamp highlighted the importance of a resilient democracy in times of social polarization during the opening event in the Meppen district hall. Those responsible are expecting exciting projects and initiatives around the topic of youth participation.
The initiatives are aimed at municipalities, youth groups and institutions in the Emsland district. Gerenkamp emphasized the importance of encouraging young people to participate, think critically and take responsibility. Mechtild Möller gave an impressive keynote speech on promoting the participation of children and young people, which visibly inspired those present.
Activities and projects already being planned
Already this year, five locations in Emsland were supported to promote children and young people's participation. The suggestions that emerged from the opening event are varied and show the commitment of the young people. Ideas such as online voting and participation in local transport planning were suggested. The expansion of youth parliaments and the creation of voting rights in political committees are also at the top of the wish list.
With this program, the district would like to initiate positive developments in youth participation. The information and application forms you need can be easily found at www.emside.de, and if you have any questions you can contact carolin.roemer@emsland.de directly.
Expand funding opportunities for young people
To further support the commitment of young people, there are also numerous national funding opportunities that are often less well known. The Federal Children and Youth Plan (KJP) supports projects for political and cultural education for children and young people. Applications can be submitted here on an ongoing basis. Programs like Erasmus+ Youth offer financing for cross-border projects and focus on the topics of inclusion and digital change.
In addition, the Doris Wuppermann Foundation supports the political engagement of young people with projects on climate protection, co-determination and against discrimination. Also “Youth helps!” offers enough scope for young people's ideas by financially supporting projects that promote social engagement.
The commitment of young people in Emsland could be just the beginning! The new funding program and the existing initiatives have heralded an exciting time for young people in the region. When it comes to promoting democracy and participation, the prospects are promising for both students and local communities.
