Insolvency in Wangerland: Swimming pools will remain open until further notice!
Wangerland is currently facing an exciting, albeit challenging, situation. Despite the bankruptcy of Wangerland Touristik GmbH, the swimming pools in the Friesland district remain open. This particularly applies to the popular seawater indoor swimming pool in Hooksiel, the Friesland Therme in Horumersiel and the Thalasso-Sea Spa, such as NDR reported. A message from Wangerland Touristik confirmed that DLRG training and school swimming are still secured.
The mayor of Wangerland, Mario Szlezak, explained that the bankruptcy in self-administration makes it possible to maintain operations and at the same time develop new structures. He emphasized that closing the pools does not make sense at the moment and that all employees can keep their jobs. Ultimately, the goal is to regain the trust of guests, locals and the local gastronomy and hotel industry, said Szlezak in an interview with NWZ.
Background to the bankruptcy
Bankruptcy became inevitable after the costs of building the Thalasso Sea Spa rose dramatically. Instead of the planned 8 million euros, the total costs amounted to 23 million euros. “The TMS was supposed to be a flagship project,” explains Szlezak, “but the financial burden was simply not bearable.” As a result, it became clear that the operating result was significantly below forecasts, which led to an intensive review of the previous structures and processes.
Public swimming pools are not just an issue in Wangerland; Many swimming pools across Germany are faced with the challenge of being dilapidated and permanently closed. The DLRG warns of a declining number of safe swimmers and an increasing number of swimming deaths when it comes to the risks of swimming. A recent survey shows that 58% of primary school children are already unable to swim safely as they transition to secondary school, while 20% cannot swim at all ( ZDF ).
Future outlook for swimming pools
Wangerland is pursuing a plan to renovate the pools, with support from neighboring communities promised. At the same time, we are working on business adjustments to ensure greater financial flexibility in the future. Mayor Szlezak sees the current crisis as an opportunity for a fundamental review and improvement of structures. The aim is to restore trust in the leisure activities on offer and to sustainably develop regional tourism.
In order to secure the long-term future of swimming pools, the Bäderallianz Deutschland is calling for comprehensive government aid for necessary investments of one billion euros over the next twelve years. This involves new buildings, energy-efficient renovations and ensuring a comprehensive supply of swimming opportunities. Nobody should have to drive more than 30 minutes to a swimming pool.
Overall, the situation is both challenging and full of opportunities. With clever management and the support of the community, Wangerland could soon shine again as a hotspot for swimming enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation.
