New life for the Ise: Renaturation will start soon in Gifhorn!

In the tranquil region around Knesebeck, Gifhorn, it will soon be “new life for the Ise”. Work will begin on August 7, 2025 to revitalize an approximately two kilometer long riverbed. This measure was planned by the Heuer-Jungemann engineering firm from Nienwohlde and has big plans. The main focus is on creating typical water structures that will significantly improve the habitats for aquatic life.

This measure is part of a larger initiative by the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), which has funded over 1,000 watercourse development projects since 2000. Previous interventions that accelerated the flow and resulted in erosion and loss of habitats are also included in this new approach. The aim of the renaturation projects is not only to improve flood protection, but also to promote biodiversity, which is particularly important in Lower Saxony given that many rivers are in poor ecological condition. nlwkn.niedersachsen.de reports on numerous similar projects on the Hase, Schunter and Rhume, which are primarily aimed at creating structured and natural running routes to create.

Technical details and construction time

The construction work on the Ise is expected to take four weeks. Cyclists should expect restrictions during this time as detour signs will indicate alternative routes. In total, around 10,000 cubic meters of earth will be moved and 4,250 tons of gravel installed. The old waterbed is preserved as a wet habitat and flood relief, while at the same time new biotopes with natural flowing waters and moist grassland floodplains are created.

At a cost of around 1.4 million euros, this initiative is being heavily supported as part of the NEOG funding program. The current measure on the Ise is therefore not just a local project, but part of a comprehensive strategy for the renaturation of many bodies of water in Lower Saxony, where, according to nna.niedersachsen.de, hardly any watercourse is near-natural from the source to the mouth is.

Sustainable development for future generations

The renaturation of rivers like the Ise is more than just a structural measure; it is a step towards ecological self-evidence that future generations can use. These projects not only promote biodiversity, but also contribute to compliance with the European Water Framework Directive. The NLWKN remains a tireless partner in Lower Saxony's river protection policy.

During the construction phase on the Ise, it is important to be patient with the temporary restrictions. However, the long-term benefits of a more vibrant and natural water landscape will enrich the region in the long term.
