In Göttingen, a recent court-ordered search of a 35-year-old man caused a stir. When searching his apartment and the basement, investigators were not only able to discover a small cannabis plantation, but also came across a collection of thirteen bicycles that were allegedly stolen. Among the discoveries were mountain bikes, trekking bikes, racing bikes and e-bikes as well as two e-scooters. The investigation into the other bicycles and e-scooters is still ongoing. The accused man was taken for identification processing, but was later released after consultation with the Göttingen public prosecutor's office. However, investigations against him remain active due to suspicion of bicycle theft and a violation of the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG).
Bicycle theft in focus
The problem of bicycle theft is a serious issue in Germany. Although the number of stolen bicycles fell by 6.9 percent in 2024, according to the latest statistics, the damage remains alarmingly high.
