Air quality in Göttingen: Fine dust levels are reaching alarming highs!

In Göttingen there is currently a lot of attention on air quality, which will be recorded from several measuring stations on July 3, 2025. In particular, the air quality in Bürgerstrasse is closely monitored, where the parameters for fine dust, nitrogen dioxide and ozone are analyzed. The evaluation takes into account the values of fine dust particles up to PM10 per cubic meter of air. The limit value for PM10 is 50 micrograms per cubic meter, although this may be exceeded a maximum of 35 times per year, reports the Göttinger Tageblatt.

The measurements clearly show that the air quality is classified as “poor”, which is not least due to the fact that several measuring stations exceed the limit value for fine dust (PM₂,₅). A highest measured value of 33 µg/m³ was registered, which, together with an air quality index (LQI) in the red zone, leads to recommendations from the Federal Environment Agency: Risk groups should avoid physical exertion outdoors, added [news.de].

Health effects and recommendations

According to the Göttinger Tageblatt, air quality is important for the daily well-being of citizens. In “very bad” conditions, particularly sensitive people should avoid any physical exertion outdoors, while in “bad” air, efforts should be limited. With a claim described as "moderate", short-term health effects are unlikely, but particularly sensitive people could still be affected.

Air quality is a growing problem worldwide. It is estimated that there are 240,000 premature deaths every year in the EU due to particulate matter, highlighting the challenge. The goal has therefore been set at EU level to achieve a 55% reduction in fine dust pollution by 2030, as reported by eea.europa.eu. It must also be taken into account that 73% of EU ecosystems are already under critical stress, which has far-reaching consequences for health and the environment.

Background to air pollution

An increase in fine dust levels is often observed, especially on New Year's Eve. The party people release around 2,050 tons of fine dust into the air every year, 75% of which is released on New Year's Eve. These particles can be harmful to health and complicate already worrying air quality. Nevertheless, the values after celebrations are usually not significant compared to the year-round exposure, explains the Göttinger Tageblatt.

Given this situation, the responsibility of citizens and authorities is clear: joint efforts are required to improve air quality and thus protect the health of the population. Anyone who has a good knack for environmental issues can do a lot to make breathing easier again in Göttingen.
