Withdrawal of the Emmerthal archivist: Mayor shows deep concern

A significant retreat in the Emmerthal community archive: Cord Hölscher, who has been working as a community archivist on a voluntary basis since 2008, has pulled the ripcord after 18 years. He surprisingly announced this at the end of last week, without going into further detail about the reasons. Mayor Dominik Petters was affected and thanked Hölscher for his many years of commitment, which has significantly shaped the archive landscape in Emmerthal. However, in his comments, Hölscher hinted that a lack of support could have played a role in his decision. He particularly points out the difficulties in publishing archive writings; The 29th volume of the series was only published as a PDF, which was felt to be insufficient.

The Historical Archive of the Emmerthal Municipality is located on the museum grounds in Börry. During Hölscher's tenure, numerous picture evenings and exhibitions were organized in various locations, including cultural halls and old people's homes. His tireless work brought the archive and local historical research a high priority. The popularity of his lectures shows how much citizens value dealing with regional history. Petters confirmed that Hölscher would have liked to continue, but changed circumstances turned out to be an obstacle.

Challenges for the volunteer culture

At a time when volunteering is becoming increasingly important, the need for new support is also evident in Emmerthal. Hölscher expressed the wish to think about the volunteer culture and to improve the framework conditions in order to strengthen voluntary work in the archive. New people in charge, especially in the role of cultural representative, would be helpful in organizing the diverse events. The cultural association currently has enough on its plate, from major events such as the Rim Festival to the Christmas market - there is little room for additional projects.

According to a study on volunteer work, support and recognition of volunteers is crucial. Aspects such as further training and the correct approach to volunteers play a central role. Those responsible in Emmerthal should sit down at a table to discuss possible approaches to improving support.

A call for participation

Cord Hölscher also appealed to citizens to take an active part. The archive is looking for committed colleagues who are interested in examining topics, collecting contemporary witness reports or conducting interviews. Those who can read the “German script” (Sütterlin) and translate documents are particularly in demand. Photographers who take on photo assignments and creative minds who want to help design the wiki are also very welcome. There are many opportunities to get involved in historical research and preserve Emmerthal's cultural heritage.

Cord Hölscher's withdrawal leaves a gap, but at the same time provides a breath of fresh air and perhaps even new ideas in archive work. It remains to be hoped that his suggestions will be heard and that the volunteer culture in Emmerthal can experience a further upswing.
