Serious accident in Hessisch Oldendorf: Moped driver under the influence of alcohol!
On Sunday there was a serious traffic accident in Hessisch Oldendorf in which two young people were injured. An 18-year-old from Salzhemmendorf was driving a moped on Kreisstraße 28 and entered the oncoming lane in a right-hand bend. There he collided with a 16-year-old e-scooter rider. Both drivers fell in the collision and suffered serious injuries, reports Oldenburg online newspaper. The vehicles were heavily damaged, indicating the high impact.
When the 18-year-old was tested for alcohol, the police found he had a blood alcohol level of over two thousand. This resulted in a blood sample being taken and his driving license confiscated. He now has to answer for negligent bodily harm and endangering road traffic. The police in Hameln are looking for witnesses who observed the incident and are asking for information on 05151/933-222. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing.
Increasing number of accidents with e-scooters
E-scooters are very popular in cities. Like an article from Attorney Berlin Frey describes, the provisions of the Small Electric Vehicles Ordinance (eKFV) regulate the use of these vehicles. Since they came into force in 2019, the use of e-scooters in Germany has increased significantly. Unfortunately, this often happens without road users being aware of the dangers.
The accident statistics speak for themselves: in 2024 there were almost 12,000 e-scooter accidents, which represents a dramatic increase of over 26 percent compared to the previous year Daily Mirror reported. What is particularly alarming is the fact that 27 people died in these accidents, compared to 22 deaths in 2023. The majority of those affected were e-scooter riders themselves, highlighting the dangers of road traffic.
Causes and risk factors
A common cause of accidents is incorrect use of the road or sidewalks. Over 21 percent of accidents are due to careless driving. E-scooter users are legally required to use cycle paths or protective lanes, while riding on sidewalks is prohibited. The influence of alcohol also plays a role: in over 12 percent of e-scooter accidents, the driver was drunk, which exceeds the comparable figures for other vehicles. This data makes it clear that responsible driving and awareness of the rules of the road are essential.
Given these developments, it is clear that both e-scooter users and other road users need to be more vigilant to avoid such tragic accidents in the future.
