An unforgettable day at the zoo: Seriously ill mother gets her wish!
A few days ago, 41-year-old Sabrina, a mother of four children, was able to spend a very special family day at Hanover Zoo. Anyone who thought that her serious cancer could stop her from doing so was wrong. Together with your loved ones and supported by the team Wish car Lower Saxony she was given an unforgettable day.
Sabrina's situation is challenging: she has little time left to live and wants nothing more than to share precious moments with her family. A total of 20 people, including all of her children, embarked on this emotional journey with her that went far beyond entering the zoo. Two volunteers were on hand to ensure Sabrina was comfortable during the trip.
An unforgettable day full of emotions
Once at the zoo, the family planned a boat trip on the Zambezi and visited the polar bears in Youkonbay. While she was sitting at a table with a portion of nuggets, a chimpanzee sat down next to her at the nearby monkey enclosure, making for a very emotional moment. Despite the pain, Sabrina ignored her discomfort in order to fully enjoy the time with her children. The day ended with a souvenir picture printed with love - a picture that now sits on her bedside table at the hospice.
The “Wish Car – Dare to Make Last Wishes” project Workers' Samaritan Association (ASB) does valuable work by enabling seriously ill people to fulfill their final wishes. Donations finance these trips, which are free of charge for those affected and their companions. The specially equipped vehicle not only ensures safe transport to the desired location, but also offers medical care during the journey.
A return to the roots
Another impressive story from Hanover Zoo concerns a former zookeeper who returned to the animal kingdom despite her serious illness. Her visit was also made possible by the Lower Saxony Wish Car. She completed her training at the zoo in the 1970s, and despite her serious cancer, it was very important to her to visit the zoo. Accompanied by her sister, her partner and volunteers, she discovered the changes and new animal species since her training period.
She was particularly fond of the lions and gorillas. The volunteers made sure the woman got enough breaks while she explored the zoo. As a birthday farewell, she even received a small plush lion as a lasting souvenir.
United in hope and love for life, Hannover Zoo, supported by the tireless commitment of ASB, shows how important it is to fight for the final wishes of those affected. Because in the end, what counts is the moments shared and the memories that connect families forever.
