After fatal knife attack: More police required in the Phoenix district!
On June 26th, a tragic knife attack occurred in the Phoenix Center in Hamburg-Harburg. A 25-year-old man was seriously injured in the early evening hours and later died from his injuries in hospital. The dispute, which apparently arose after a dispute between the perpetrator and the victim, has not only legal but also political consequences that affect citizens' sense of security. A cell phone video shows the injured man and the suspected attacker, who fled immediately after the incident. However, the perpetrator, also 25 years old and of Syrian descent, was quickly caught by passers-by and arrested by the police. An investigation into manslaughter is currently underway against him and an arrest warrant has already been issued. The police assume that the dispute was related to a woman from the perpetrator's family.
The reactions to the knife attack were not lacking. The CDU MPs Birgit Stöver and André Trepoll expressed sharp criticism of Hamburg politics and accused the Senate of “denying reality”. According to suederelbe24.de, police presence is lacking throughout the Phoenix district, which is particularly worrying given the numerous acts of violence in the region. The Senate's response to the repeated criticism shows no acute need for action and almost ignores the call statistics of the responsible police commissioner 46 (PK 46). Over 7,200 emergency calls were received in the first six months of the year and, incomprehensibly, 25 posts are missing in this context.
Calls for more security
The CDU is now calling for a noticeable increase in police presence in order to minimize areas of fear in the city. After all, concerns about the safety of citizens are not unfounded. The number of violent crimes in Germany has been rising again since 2021 and is now almost a third above the low level during the corona pandemic. [Statista](https://de.statista.com/themen/11062/ criminalitaet-in-deutschland-violentcrime/) reports that around 217,000 violent crimes were registered in 2024 alone, which is the highest number since 2007. Such statistics have a greater impact on people's sense of security than theft or fraud, which is why solving and solving violent crimes should become an increasingly higher priority.
Furthermore, the media increasingly points out that half of the suspects in violent crimes are under 21 years old, which underpins concerns about the influence of economic insecurity and social pressures on young people. A situation that both the CDU and the police must take seriously in order to guarantee citizens a safe environment.
No matter where citizens move, whether in shopping centers or on the street, the question of safety is omnipresent. Incidents like the knife attack in the Phoenix Center make it clear that there is an urgent need for action. The Senate will not be able to avoid the demands of the CDU if it wants to regain the trust of the population in the long term.
