The opening of the Lüneburg city center youth center has been delayed!
The new youth center in Lüneburg city center, planned for an opening on August 15, 2025, has to be postponed due to unexpected delays in fire protection. City planning officer Heike Gundermann explained that the necessary documents are not yet ready. A building permit cannot therefore be granted. The city of Lüneburg, which is a tenant in the former Vierorten building, is dependent on the owner's cooperation. Please understand that the opening cannot take place as originally planned, according to the city's official announcement. Regardless of this, youth care already offers a variety of activities that can be viewed at junges-lueneburg.de. For many young people in Lüneburg, the opening of the center represents an important achievement, but it will now have to wait for an indefinite period of time.
The town hall facade in Lüneburg also faces particular challenges. As the renovation of the youth center progresses, emergency protection for the facade of the town hall has become necessary. The city plans to build steel structures to stabilize the vault while the foundations for emergency support are already being prepared. It turned out that the facade no longer meets today's safety requirements, which is due, among other things, to crooked positions and rust formation on the wrought iron anchors. The work was carried out under the supervision of the city archeology, which is supposed to secure historically relevant finds. The area of the town hall arcades has been closed since the beginning of March 2025 as the emergency security is expected to remain in place for up to two years, while a comprehensive renovation of the facade is scheduled to begin in 2026.
A look at youth work in Lüneburg
Youth work as a whole faces diverse challenges and opportunities. The German Youth Institute shows that open child and youth work institutions function as important social places for many young people. Here they find support that goes beyond leisure activities. These centers are often close contact points for everyday questions and offer space for volunteer work. In addition, the city's youth care center aims to actively involve young people in the programming of the new center, which offers a great opportunity to incorporate their wishes and needs into the offerings.
The progress of the renovation is also documented on Instagram, which further increases the anticipation among the young people. The first offers for young people aged 12 and over are already planned before the 2025 summer holidays, which means that the development of the center is also progressing in this respect, although the official opening now has to take place later. Even though the start has now been postponed, the prospect of a lively and active youth center in Lüneburg that can promote youth culture remains.
