Now things are getting bumpy: Lüneburg is starting major road renovations!
The streets in the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg suffered greatly from the winter conditions, especially frost and de-icing salt. Potholes are commonplace and pose a danger not only to drivers, but also to cyclists and pedestrians. But the city has recognized the problems and is taking action: employees of wastewater Grün and Lüneburger Service GmbH (AGL) recently began temporarily filling the potholes with cold asphalt. This method is quick and inexpensive, but unfortunately not particularly long-lasting. Mastic asphalt is used for more stable repairs that are more effective at temperatures above 5 degrees Celsius. AGL has its own cooker for this, which makes work on site more flexible and efficient.
The major wave of renovations is planned for 2026 and primarily affects Boecklerstrasse, Schomakerstrasse and Artlenburger Landstrasse. Work on Boecklerstrasse in particular is scheduled to start at the end of February, weather permitting. The aim is to identify and prioritize the roads most in need of repair. The associated master plan for road renovation was drawn up in 2024. Important criteria such as the damage situation and the importance of the roads in Lüneburg's transport network were taken into account. In addition to the roads, a gentler approach to cycle paths is also being sought; a corresponding plan is in the starting blocks.
Renovation projects on Zeppelinstrasse
In addition, urgently needed renovation work is being carried out in another area of Lüneburg on Zeppelinstrasse, which is located in the harbor industrial area. From June 23rd, parts of the road will begin to be renovated. The condition is very bad and numerous potholes make the passage dangerous. The work includes both the base layer and the road surface and will result in the road being completely closed. The area at the junction with Lilienthalstrasse is particularly affected, where construction is expected to take around two weeks.
In order to keep the disruption to traffic as low as possible, diversion signs will be set up and traffic routing will be regulated in coordination with the local companies. Bus routes 5100 and 5120 will not serve some stops during the construction period, so passengers are advised to switch to bus route 5010. The total costs for the construction work amount to around 125,000 euros.
Funding and the master plan
The comprehensive renovation measures are part of the road renovation master plan, which was last updated in 2025. This document is intended to resolve the long renovation backlog in many streets in the city of Lüneburg and ensures that funding can be obtained for numerous projects. Future renovations are also planned for Barckhausenstrasse and other streets. It remains to be seen how quickly the measures will progress and whether the renovations will make the roads safer and more pleasant for all road users.
