Young Union calls for decisive measures against decay in Lüneburg!
In recent weeks there has been increased discussion in Lüneburg about security in the city center. The Junge Union Lüneburg is sounding the alarm: The situation is intolerable, they say. At a meeting of young politicians it became clear that the increasing deterioration of the city center, open drinking, aggressive begging practices and physical attacks on the sands represent a serious problem. How Lüneburg Current reports, Mayor Claudia Kalisch and the city council are receiving a lot of criticism for passively waiting instead of taking active action.
Arwed Köster, the district chairman of the Junge Union, calls for a rethink: “It is high time that we don’t just talk, but act.” The Junge Union has proposed a number of measures to help improve the situation. This includes strengthening the municipal security service, a strict ban on alcohol at bus stops and a pilot project for video surveillance in the city center. The aim is to make the Sande an inviting place again, where consumer behavior does not shape the image.
Security concept in planning
These demands are no coincidence. As early as August 2024, the mayor mentioned the increasing number of complaints from citizens and the police at a council meeting. The city is planning to set up a municipal security service to sustainably improve the security situation. How Lüne Blog reports, this service will operate in close cooperation with the police and street workers. As part of a newly convened round table, several actors, including social and regulatory authorities, will work together on a solution.
Among other things, additional positions for the municipal security service and closer cooperation with street workers are planned. The security service employees are uniformed and have the authority to punish administrative offenses, issue verbal warnings and issue expulsions. The service should be set up as quickly as possible, with two positions already being advertised.
Challenges of urban security
But the challenges that emerge here are not just local. The Federal Agency for Civic Education examines the problem of urban security in an analysis. Cities are seen as places that not only have a lot to offer, but also potentially pose many threats, including crime and social tensions. In large cities like Lüneburg, where aggressive crimes and drug problems are increasing, the call for optimized security architecture is becoming louder and louder.
The implementation of the new measures requires a good hand in coordination between the various actors such as the police, fire brigade and social services. At the same time, citizens are also required to develop an awareness of safety in their surroundings and to actively participate in shaping their community. This is the only way Lüneburg can once again become a place where everyone feels safe and comfortable.
