Starting signal for the Bilmer Berg II commercial area: Lüneburg on course for growth!
There's news from Lüneburg! On June 20, 2025, the Hanseatic city council took the decisive step to develop the Bilmer Berg II industrial area. The necessary development plans were unanimously approved, a clear indicator of the desire to further strengthen Lüneburg as a business location. The area of around 34 hectares in the southeast of the city will be developed in sections and offers space for small and medium-sized companies that are looking for new settlement areas. As the Uelzen press reports, the planning phase took two years and was completed on time.
The entire development is expected to take two and a half years. One advantage: the first construction projects can start before all development measures have been completed. The area benefits from its convenient location on the planned A39, allowing smooth access for future businesses. Additional access is via August-Wellenkamp-Straße and the newly created Friedrich-Penseler-Straße.
Cooperation strategies and community projects
The development of Bilmer Berg II is carried out in close cooperation with the WLH economic development agency in the Harburg district and the economic development agency for the city and district of Lüneburg (WLG). A cooperation agreement signed on May 15, 2023 serves to share the planning costs to ensure effective and targeted development. This underlines the commitment to the regional economy, as Jens Wrede, Managing Director of the WLH, emphasizes the great need for free commercial space, while pointing out that around 260 companies have already successfully settled there. The future of the business location is definitely being worked on here, as the Lüne blog also describes.
Another interesting detail is the planning of a new sports area on a seven-hectare area. The preparations for this include setting up a working group to develop a concept for the Bilmer Berg II sports park. The interests of the public are not neglected either - early participation took place in 2023 and 2025.
Sustainable development in focus
In addition to the commercial and sports areas, care is taken to secure existing forest and green areas and create compensation areas. This not only supports sustainable urban development, but also follows the findings of the ExWoSt research field, which has examined concepts for the sustainable further development of commercial areas, as documented on the BBSR website. The combination of urban development improvements with the sustainable development of urban production locations is of central importance here.
These comprehensive plans and a clear strategy show that the city of Lüneburg is ready to meet the challenge of a growing economy with a well-thought-out concept. Bilmer Berg II could soon become a new hotspot for companies and at the same time a place for community.
