Ax attack in Oldenburg: cyclist brutally attacked at night!

On Friday night, a 40-year-old man in Oldenburg experienced a shocking attack that not only affected his health, but also his sense of security. At 2:10 a.m. the man was riding his bike in the Bümmersteder Tredde/Dwaschweg area when he was suddenly attacked by two aggressors. They were sitting in a silver small car with the hazard lights activated when they spoke to the cyclist. When he tried to drive on, the men violently stopped him. One of the perpetrators had an ax and injured the cyclist with the handle of the weapon. On his way to help, the bleeding man rang several doors until someone finally came to his aid and took him to the hospital. The police have initiated proceedings for grievous bodily harm and are urgently looking for witnesses, particularly on 0441 / 7904115, to shed light on this incident. The first descriptions of the perpetrators are also available: The first perpetrator is described as being around 170 cm tall with a normal build and short blonde hair, while the second perpetrator is described as being around 190 cm tall and with a strong build. Both are said to be in their mid-20s.

Such incidents shed a bright light on the current situation in Germany, where violent crime remains an explosive issue. As [Statista](https://de.statista.com/themen/11062/ criminalitaet-in-deutschland-violentcrime/) reports, violent crimes account for less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police, but they influence people's sense of security far more than theft or fraud. In 2024, around 217,000 violent crimes were registered, the highest number since 2007. What is interesting is that the proportion of young suspects has increased significantly - around a third of the around 197,000 suspects were under 21 years of age.

Another alarming example

The attack on the cyclist is not the only worrying event in Oldenburg. On August 23, 2025, an 18-year-old from Oldenburg was the victim of an attack in the city center. The young man was out with friends when a group of around ten people dressed in dark clothing and some of them masked attacked him. In this incident, a telescopic baton was used, which resulted in minor injuries to the victim. Here too, the police have initiated proceedings for grievous bodily harm and are asking for information on the same telephone number as in the current case.

The fact that such violent crimes happen in a country that is otherwise considered safe is alarming. The Nordwest-Zeitung highlights that the increase in these incidents could be due to various social factors. These include economic uncertainty, social stress and, last but not least, the lasting psychological effects of the corona pandemic. Many people are feeling a growing sense of insecurity, whether on the streets or in their everyday lives.

The data and reports collected show that the issue of violent crime is not just a local problem, but a societal problem that concerns many people. It remains to be hoped that the investigations into these cases will lead to a quicker clarification and security can be restored in Oldenburg.
