Traffic chaos in Verden: Accident involving a Pedelec driver and drunk driving!
On June 14, 2025, it caused a stir in the region: a road accident in Eitze that not only caused material damage, but also affected the health of those involved. A 45-year-old driver of a VW Golf overlooked a 77-year-old Pedelec rider while turning onto Weitzmühlener Straße, who consequently fell and sustained minor injuries. The property damage is estimated at around 3,500 euros, as reported by News.de.
But it wasn't just in Eitze that the events were without consequences. There was another incident in Verden on Friday evening when a 21-year-old Citroen driver overlooked an 11-year-old child on his bicycle while reversing on Stifthofstrasse. The child was slightly injured but left the scene of the accident on his own. Particularly worrying: The driver provided false personal details and was driving without a valid driving license, which led to criminal proceedings being initiated.
Road safety in focus
The incidents in the region are in the context of increasing accident numbers in Germany. According to Destatis, traffic accidents have increased in recent years, which could be due to increasing traffic density. Road traffic accident statistics provide comprehensive data that serve as a basis for legislative measures and traffic education. Particular attention is paid to accidents with personal injuries, the causes of which are often insufficient distance, inadequate speed and drunk driving.
An alarming trend can also be seen in the area of e-bikes: According to Statista, a total of 23,744 people were injured or killed in accidents involving e-bikes in 2023. Given the growing number of Pedelec riders, especially the older population, road safety is even more urgent. E-bike riders are involved in accidents at a disproportionately high rate compared to the total number of cyclists and e-bikes.
A worrying development
In another incident, a 23-year-old VW Taigo driver was stopped in Achim early on Saturday morning for driving under the influence of alcohol. With a breath alcohol level of 1.58 per mille and proven influence by narcotics, he showed an alarming example of the increasing problem of drunk driving. His driver's license was confiscated and he was banned from driving.
In conclusion, road safety remains a central issue in the regions and beyond. Even though statistics like those from Destatis and Statista give us valuable insights into accidents, we as a society must always be vigilant and advocate for greater safety on our roads. Those responsible are called upon to take measures to sustainably reduce the numbers and make traffic safer.
