The field hamster in danger

The challenges for the field hamster are great. The AG Field Hamster Protection Lower Saxony works intensively to protect them. Two central projects are currently underway: on the one hand, the reintroduction of the European hamster in certain habitats near Göttingen, and on the other hand, the population increase in the Hanover region, supported by a compensation measure as part of the SuedLinks. The aim is to stabilize the existing populations and secure genetic diversity - a real ray of hope in the work, which brings with it many challenges.

Recording the European hamster population is not only crucial for the preservation of the species, but also for the implementation and adaptation of protective measures. These measures are important in order to take legal requirements and intervention regulations into account in land-use planning, as in NLWKN guidelines is executed. Here you can find information about the way of life, reproductive biology and the specific requirements for European hamster protection.

Together for the field hamster

The ÖNSA has been working closely with the Peine district since 2021 and is committed to the Lower Saxony Way. The state of Lower Saxony promotes on-site nature conservation support and ensures that such projects receive greater focus. Collaboration with farmers, lower conservation authorities and the public plays a crucial role in ensuring the survival of the European hamster.

Every helper can do their part to ensure that one day we will see more of this cute rodent in our fields again. So if you have a knack for nature conservation or are just curious, you shouldn't miss the opportunity!
